Scholarships are awarded for a variety of reasons and application procedures vary. Scholarships are usually awarded based on merit (something you do well) or need (financial). Perhaps the most difficult thing about scholarships is spending the time necessary to find all the scholarships you are eligible for. There are millions of dollars worth of scholarships available, but finding the money, ensuring that you're eligible, and completing the applications on time take dedication and perseverance. Below and to the side are links and tips to finding some of the scholarships you might be eligible for. For examples of scholarships that have been available in the past, please check on the Scholarship List. In addition to applying for scholarships, be sure to review the Financial Aid page to learn about other ways to help finance your college education.
College and universities typically have grants and scholarships available for students applying to their schools. Be sure to search for scholarships on college websites and follow application procedures which vary by school and scholarship.
Scholarships funded by individuals, corporations, and non-profit organizations abound. Because many are national scholarships, there will be a large pool of potential applicants. If you have limited time, apply to national scholarships where you are a stand-out applicant; ones where you absolutely, outstandingly exemplify the characteristics the organization is looking to recognize. Using national search engines like those to the right are the best ways to find opportunities especially for you.
Many scholarships offered specifically for students in North Carolina can be found at www.cfnc.org.
Local scholarships are scholarships typically available to students in our area, county, or school. With fewer potential applicants, the odds of students being awarded these scholarships are better than state and national scholarships. As with other scholarships, read the qualifications carefully and complete applications neatly and ON TIME!

Student athletes are often interested in knowing more about playing sports in college. Colleges are limited in the number of athletic scholarships they can award each year and students with the most talent who have good grades are typically the most attractive to colleges. Students wishing to join Division I and II college teams must meet eligibility requirements in order to be eligible. Your coaches should be able to assist you in learning more about college athletics.
You are strongly advised to watch the Free Recruiting Webinar as well.
Additional information about eligibility at Division I and II colleges is located at www.eligibilitycenter.org. This site is the NCAA's official website for sports eligibility. Juniors and seniors being actively recruited by Division I and II schools will need to register with the Eligibility Center.
